Philosophy of the Centre of Midwifery Education

To promote and support lifelong learning and evidence-based midwifery practice in conjunction with personal and professional development, through the sharing of knowledge and experience so that midwives improve the care they provide to women and their babies



The Centre of Midwifery Education is located on the 5th Floor at Cork University Maternity Hospital. Tel 021-4920724 Ext. 20724.

Programmes Provided 

  • The educational programmes provided by the Centre of Midwifery Education are accredited with Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland/An Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (NMBI/ABAC)
  • One of the programmes is accredited with University College Cork (UCC)
  • All programmes are in accordance with a training needs analysis and in conjunction with national programmes designed by the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (OMNSD)
  • The Prospectus for Continuing Education for the Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) is updated annually and contains details of the programmes provided for that year

The staff of the CME provide IMEWS education with the Practice Development Team. They are also involved in the provision of the Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (NRP) in conjunction with the NRP team from UCC/CUMH.


E Learning Resources

A number of the programmes offered by the CME employ this method of learning, including K2 training, venepuncture and peripheral intravenous cannulation. Blended learning is a formal education programme in which an individual learns partly through online delivery of content and instruction with some aspect of individual control over time, place, path or pace. Face-to-face classroom teaching and learning strategies are combined with computer-mediated activities.
