Colposcopy

Colposcopy

A cervical screening test (formally known as a smear test) is a screening test to examine the surface cells from the cervix.

If these cells are abnormal then a repeat smear may be performed or a referral for a colposcopy examination may be made. Colposcopy is a specialist examination of the cervix using a magnifying telescope, this can detect precancerous cells that will be monitored to see if they resolve spontaneously or require treatment.

All referrals for colposcopy should be sent to St Finbarr’s Hospital Colposcopy clinic. This is a Cervicalcheck registered clinic.
